The Wellness Industry Has Slipped into a Trend Trap. We’re Not Buying Into It.

The industry loves a trend.

There’s always a new way to move, a new piece of equipment, a new style of class, a new studio promising the next big thing.

But I’ve never been particularly interested in chasing what’s trending.

At Meridian Yoga and Pilates, our approach is rooted in practices that have stood the test of time.

Our approach is timeless, but that doesn’t mean it’s stuck in the past.

Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, and Pilates has been around for more than a century. We can adapt the way we teach them to suit modern lifestyles, modern bodies and what we understand about movement today. We can use contemporary knowledge, equipment, resistance and different approaches to strength, while still respecting the traditional roots and fundamental principles of the practices.

For me, that’s the difference between adapting and changing for the sake of a trend.

Chasing trends means constantly shifting to keep up with whatever is new. We’d rather understand what works, keep what matters and adapt thoughtfully where it benefits the people we teach.

That’s why, when it comes to our Yoga and Pilates teacher trainings in Glasgow, we’re not interested in getting people through a qualification as quickly as possible so they can jump onto the next fitness trend.

We want to teach:

Foundations.
Anatomy.
Principles.
Mechanics.
History and philosophy.
Teaching skills.

And, most importantly, how to work with actual human beings — because everyone is individual and no two bodies are the same.

Introducing our 2027 Teacher Training

Our Glasgow East End yoga and Pilates studio is only two years old, but my own journey with movement and teaching began long before the studio opened.

I practiced Mat Pilates before discovering yoga, and it remains something I feel incredibly strongly about as a way of understanding the body and developing intelligent movement.

In 2027, we’re offering two teacher training programmes:

Level 3 Mat Pilates Teacher Training, delivered in conjunction with the Ordinary People Academy.

And our 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Glasgow.

Both programmes are developed to give you more than a certificate. They give you time to properly study the discipline you’re choosing to teach, because being a good teacher isn’t about being able to demonstrate an impressive sequence or remember a script.

It’s about understanding what you’re teaching and why, being able to look at the person in front of you and recognise that their body, experience and ability may be completely different from the person beside them. Knowing when to adapt something, when to challenge someone and when something isn’t appropriate for an individual.

These are skills that take time to develop.

And, over and above all of that, it’s about how we make people feel.

Respected.

That they have autonomy over the way they move.

They feel welcome, seen and supported in the communities we are trying to create.

We aren’t trying to create the next fitness trend.

We aren't interested in aesthetics or being skinny

We’re interested in the things that last.

Strong bodies. Good movement. Knowledge. Practice. Teaching that is thoughtful, intelligent and sustainable.

If that sounds like the kind of teacher you want to become, our 2027 training programmes are now open for applications.
