Why I Created Sculpt & Flow Yoga: Strength, Stability and Yoga in Glasgow’s East End
Yoga can build strength.
Not just flexibility, mobility or the ability to hold a posture, but useful strength that supports how we move through everyday life.
That’s the thinking behind Sculpt & Flow at Meridian Yoga & Pilates in Glasgow’s East End.
Sculpt & Flow combines flowing yoga sequences with light weights and strength-based movements to create a class that works the whole body while keeping the principles of yoga at its heart.
What is Sculpt & Flow?
Sculpt & Flow is a yoga-based strength class using light weights, typically between 1–5kg.
We move through familiar yoga sequences alongside controlled resistance movements, working on strength, stability, balance and muscular endurance.
You’ll still find plenty of the things you’d expect from a yoga class: movement linked with breath, flowing sequences, mindful transitions and time to connect with how your body feels.
The difference is that we add a little resistance.
This might mean holding light weights through a standing sequence, adding pulses or controlled movements to strengthen particular muscle groups, or using resistance to make familiar yoga shapes feel a little different.
The aim isn’t to lift as heavy as possible or push your body to its limits.
It’s about building strength gradually and intentionally.
Why add weights to yoga?
As we get older, maintaining muscle strength becomes increasingly important. Adding strength and stability to your yoga practice also helps you to activate stabilising muscles to control the extra load. Adding resistance may help counteract hyper-mobility and tissue laxity that can lead to joint instability.
Strength supports our joints, helps us maintain bone health, improves balance and gives us more confidence in everyday movement.
Yoga already offers plenty of opportunities to develop strength, particularly through weight-bearing poses and controlled transitions.
Adding light weights activates deep stabilising muscles and heightens proprioception (your brain's awareness of where your body is in space). While it might seem like adding a heavy load would make balancing harder, using light weights (typically 1 to 5 lbs) alters your physical and mental mechanics to create a more grounded foundation
Is Sculpt & Flow a yoga class or a fitness class?
Sculpt and Flow is not an exercise class. The movement is rooted in yoga, but the intention is different from a traditional yoga class.
You won’t spend the whole class working towards deeper flexibility or longer-held postures.
Instead, we’ll use flowing sequences and controlled resistance to create a class that feels strong, energising and purposeful.
There’s no expectation to be able to do advanced yoga postures, and you don’t need previous experience with weights.
What weights do you use?
We use light weights, generally between 1–5kg.
You don’t need to know what weight you should use before coming along. I’ll give options throughout the class, and you can choose what feels appropriate for you.
You can also work without weights at any point.
The goal is to create enough resistance to challenge you without compromising your movement or technique.
Is Sculpt & Flow suitable for beginners?
Yes.
You don’t need to be an experienced yogi or someone who regularly strength trains. I’ll offer different options throughout the class so that you can make movements more or less challenging depending on your experience, energy and body on the day.
As with all Meridian classes, there’s no expectation that your body should look or move like anyone else’s. You can take the version of a movement that works for you.
What can I expect from a Sculpt & Flow class?
We’ll build through flowing sequences, strength-based movements and controlled resistance work, with options to increase or decrease the intensity.
You might notice your legs working during standing sequences, your arms and shoulders getting a little shaky during strength work, or your core working hard to stabilise you.
But this isn’t about pushing through exhaustion.
It’s about developing strength while staying connected to your body and your breath.
Why I wanted to bring Sculpt & Flow to Meridian
I’ve taught yoga for many years, and my own practice has changed as I’ve got older. I’m less interested now in how far I can force my body into a shape and much more interested in how strong, stable and capable I can feel. This has changed the way I teach too.
Yoga can also be about building strength, improving stability, maintaining mobility and learning to work with the body you have today.
By introducing weights to my own practice, I feel stronger through my core. Overall, I feel stronger and steadier and when I come back to practicing balancing postures such as Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon) I feel more stable. It has also significantly reduced my lower back pain through taking a step back and working on strength and stability.
Sculpt & Flow grew out of this approach.
It’s a way of bringing some of the benefits of strength training into a yoga environment, without losing the movement, mindfulness and body awareness that make yoga so valuable.
