Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background in Pilates and teaching?

A: My name is Victoria, and I’m the founder of Ordinary People Academy. We help ordinary people become extraordinary wellness professionals through Pilates, yoga, breathwork, meditation, and children’s movement teacher training. I’ve been working in this field for nearly 20 years! I’m originally from Northern Ireland and was the first to offer a Level 3 Pilates certification there, which I still deliver annually. Now, I’m thrilled to bring this training to Glasgow.

Q: What does your Pilates Teacher Training include?

A: Our training is a Level 3 qualification, which is important because it’s equivalent to a personal trainer level. This means you’re recognised as a fitness professional, not just an instructor, and can charge higher rates. The course runs one weekend a month from January to July, giving you time to practise and absorb the material. It’s all in-person, but you’ll also observe classes, and build a portfolio of your own classes to teach after graduation.

Q: Why is Level 3 important, and how is the course accredited?

A: Level 3 is a standard set by the UK to ensure quality and consistency in Pilates teacher training. It’s more comprehensive than previous levels and allows you to work as a fitness professional. Our course is accredited by YMCA Awards, a leading UK awarding body. I previously worked with Active IQ but found YMCA Awards to be more responsive and robust, especially during the pandemic.

Q: Who is the course for? Do you need experience in Pilates to sign up?

A: You don’t need prior Pilates experience to join, though I recommend trying a class first! I’ve had students who never attended a Pilates class before starting the course. We welcome career changers, fitness professionals, yoga teachers, and anyone seeking flexibility in their work-life. Pilates is accessible to all ages and backgrounds.

Q: How does Pilates training complement other disciplines like yoga or personal training?

A: I was a yoga teacher before I trained in Pilates. At first, I wasn’t interested in Pilates, but I realised it deepened my understanding of core strength and improved my yoga practice. Pilates is great for athletes, weight trainers, and anyone wanting a holistic approach to fitness. The focus on core awareness and the mind-body connection benefits everyone.

Q: There’s a recent rising trend in Reformer Pilates, is it recommended to have a Mat Pilates qualification before teaching Reformer?

A: Absolutely. Governing bodies are moving towards making a mat Pilates qualification a prerequisite for reformer training. Mat work teaches you the core principles of Pilates, which you can then apply to reformer work. Interestingly, Joseph Pilates actually invented the reformer for people who struggled to get onto the floor to do mat work, for example due to injuries, so mastering the mat is essential.

Q: If you haven’t taught in another discipline before, how does the course help people build confidence in teaching?

A: The course is designed to build your teaching skills and confidence, even if you’ve never taught before. We keep class sizes small for personalised attention. You’ll practise teaching in front of your peers and receive feedback. We also cover business skills to prepare you for real-world success.

Q: Is there support or mentoring after the course?

A: Yes! Community is at the heart of what we do. Graduates often become friends, collaborators, and support networks for each other. I encourage everyone to develop their own teaching style and attract clients who resonate with them. This partnership with Meridian Yoga & Pilates also means trainees can come to classes and feel part of the studio community too.

Q: What are the payment options and practical details for enrolment?

A: We offer flexible payment plans, including instalments and a discount for paying in full. When signing up you’ll need to complete an application and a physical activity readiness questionnaire. The course is generally not suitable for pregnant people, but we have had people become pregnant during the course of training and can make accommodations if that’s the case.

Q: Any final thoughts for prospective students?

A: I’m excited to continue delivering this course in Glasgow and to partner with Meridian Yoga & Pilates. You’ll join a vibrant community, gain practical experience, and launch a fulfilling career. If you have questions or want to enrol, reach out to me or Michelle at the studio. The next course starts soon—don’t miss your chance!
